About Us

For over 20 years, Chapel Hill Wild Bird has been a beloved part of the Triangle’s birding community. Originally located in the Eastgate Shopping Center, we have proudly served the bird enthusiasts of Orange, Durham, Wake, Chatham, and Alamance counties with high-quality bird seed, suet, feeders, and more. Our recent move to our new location in Chatham County has allowed us to continue our tradition of offering excellent products and unmatched customer service.

As a small, locally-owned business, we take pride in being a community fixture. Our roots in the area have allowed us to develop long-lasting relationships with customers and neighbors alike. Many of our patrons have been with us since the beginning, and we cherish the opportunity to give back to a region that has supported us for so many years.

What sets Chapel Hill Wild Bird apart is our team’s wealth of knowledge and passion for backyard bird feeding. Each staff member is an avid bird watcher with experience in local birding patterns, habitats, and species. Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or just starting to attract birds to your yard, our friendly and knowledgeable team is here to help. Meet Our Flock!

Kayla Ewell, owner and manager

Kayla has been with Chapel Hill Wild Bird since 2022 as manager, and acquired the business as owner in 2023. She is originally from Greenville, NC. You can usually find her elbow deep in a new craft project or Lego set, whether she’s at the store or at home with her two cats.

Kayla’s favorite Piedmont wild bird is the Pileated Woodpecker, “because they’re absolutely gorgeous, of course! I also coined the nickname Woody Woodpecker as a kid because of my laugh.”

Nate Whitworth

Nate has been with Chapel Hill Wild Bird since 2022. He is originally from Gastonia, NC. Nate is a student at UNC Chapel Hill majoring in Art and Women & Gender Studies. When he’s not slinging seed, you can find him volunteering for nature hikes at Triangle Land Conservancy or checking out the local thrift stores.

Nate’s favorite Piedmont wild bird is the Blue Jay,

“because they’re sassy and have a well-rounded diet.”

Emily Martin

Emily has been with Chapel Hill Wild Bird since 2020. She is originally from Sylva, NC. Emily graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2023 with a BA in Environmental Studies. When she’s not designing websites, you can find her hiking, gardening, or searching for the best iced London Fog in the Triangle.

Emily’s favorite Piedmont wild bird is the Carolina Wren, because it was the favorite of both her grandmothers and “they’ll always let you know if your feeders are empty.”
